The point was to squeeze money out of nostalgic adults. It failed to even provide that feeling of nostalgia. It feels like someone took an essay about the script of the original Lion King (without actually watching the movie) and made a movie out that.

Aladdin was exactly the same story but less entertaining so I’m crossing my fingers lion king isn’t the same way

I agree with Chris's complaint that because it looks real, you can't exaggerate emotions, but I wouldn't go as far as to say there was no soul here. I still felt some of the moments in the film.

I didnt want any spins or anything. I wanted the same emotions evoked by the original. But the scenes were poorly lit and they didnt even use the lions body language to convey the emotions in the film. Especially the scene with mufasa in the sky. Annoyed me so much

The fact that disney is releasing FIVE live action films/remakes (including the Maleficent sequel) before the end of the year and only ONE animated movie really says some things

the only movies that they should make as live action are treasure planet and Atlantis, those are perfect candidates, treasure planet will be like interstellar but it will be with so much fun

They could remake movies like Atlantis, Treasure Planet and Sword and the Stone but no, they remake The Lion King.

Just got back from the theatre and absolutely loved it! Aladin, beauty and the beast for example didn't do anything for me, but this was great.

It’s ironic that Disney, a company that built itself up on original, dazzling, and timeless films, is now just cashing in on said films by just releasing the same films in a different cinematographic style and making billions off them.

OH Geez; another critic. 11 minutes of this video and all I needed was 3 mins to realize that Dude; why are you picking apart this movie like some ravenous buzzard on a dead animal carcass? Each word from you is an opinion that is harmful and discouraging. Please just STFU and try to enjoy it for what it is, an amazing achievement; for crying out loud.

First of all, you haven’t watched the movie, though, you are title says movie review? How can you do a review of something if you haven’t seen. Then, I think I’ll go with what the makers of a classic think is best than what you think.

Its characters than we all know and love from our childhood, its a stort that is knows and loved from out. Childhood. Why in the name hell would you change such a masterpeece. The original was very touching and emotional and this remake achives those exact same feelings, when watching this film you will remember all those forgotten moments and feeling from when you were Young and watched it, this movie talets you back to all of that. And that is why this movie is a gigant success. It is super respectful to the source material and doesnt take some Weird twist and spin off that will just enrage you. This movie is spectacular and the people behind it deserves an award. When I same this movie in the theatre and when it ended people stood up and aplawd and clapped. Not so many movies gives such an impact on the audience these days. This movie was amazing and is an amazing achivement for the movie industri.

They cut out the hitting scene cause it made no sense for a baboon to carry a stick 24/7 I guess, he only picks it up after he's going to fight (hello old friend), so that was a change in the plot. And he uses the stick to fight at the end scene. Simple subtle changes which made a huge impact to his character arc, he still teaches Simba his lesson. That said, I liked most of the new stuff in this but I still dislike the short version of Be Prepared, I think that was the only thing I really disliked in this movie. Also just a question, you complain Simba had no emotions during the stampede scene. How would you have done this yourself? Seriously, if Simba suddenly would open his mouth scream his eyes out and show fear like a human that would have ruined the movie even more. Also I find it funny how you say "the lions fighting just looked like... lions fighting" :D well duh... that's what it fricking was. Lions fighting! That's how it looks like.

You hit the nail on the head. The issue is that they made the storyline the exact same BUT also tweaked and cut out so many of the parts that made the movie what we know and love. So much of the emotion and soul was stripped away and it felt like a really bland and cheesy remake of the original. The character’s voices were also borderline monotone in the most dramatic scenes which definitely didn’t make up for the lack of physical expression in the animals. Overall a major disappointment.

I’m worried that game-changing, groundbreaking technology will never be used to its full potential, only soulless cash-grab remakes. I mean look at Toy Story: it’s an original film that was groundbreaking at the time, it changed the world of animation. We have even greater technology now, and instead of creating it to make original stories that will define people’s childhoods and the era, it’s just gonna be used to remake stuff. Anyway that’s my useless two cents on the issue 😂

                                                                      • Garbage Head

Call me bland, but that actually wouldve caused more buzz and wouldve still been something either never been done or rarely done.

                                                                        • 1.21 Gigawatts

Unpopular opinion: I preferred the remake to the original. I enjoyed the more serious tone that they went for and I liked the fact that they removed a lot of the silliness from it. I'm looking at you hula dance and lovely bunch of coconuts. Some might find moments like that funny but I found them jarring and cringey. I liked how they gave the hyena's a bit more of a backstory with their leader and how they operate. Same goes with Scar although they could have done more than elude to Scar and Mufasa's history.

I thought the characters were utilized more and voice acted better for the most part. I preffered Chiwetel to Irons only because Iron's played him more like a cheesy 50's villain where as Chiwetel gave it a much more sinister approach. I liked how Zazu wasn't just a silly sidekick. He actually risks his life multiple times for the good of the pride lands. Saving both Simba and Nala quite a few times. Donald Glover made a great SImba although it felt jarring at first. His voice is at a higher pitch which makes it hard to imagine coming out of the mouth of a Lion but I got used to it after a while. He emoted far better than deadpan Broderick ever did. The child actors fell incredibly flat for me however. I couldn't get behind what they were saying.

Overall the only real thing that stops this from being a great movie is the animation. I don't know why Jon Favreau went with such a hyperrealistic look. It's incredibly off putting to hear Simba mourn the death of his father but his facial expression doesn't change. I wish they had stuck with the look of 2016's Jungle Book which had realistic animation but still allowed the characters to emote. If not this then at least have the Lions move their eyes in response to what's happening.
