  • The universe is incredibly old, astoundingly vast and populated by trillions of planets -- so where are all the aliens? Astronomer Stephen Webb has an explanation: we're alone in the universe. In a mind-expanding talk, he spells out the remarkable barriers a planet would need to clear in order to host an extraterrestrial civilization -- and makes a case for the beauty of our potential cosmic loneliness. "The silence of the universe is shouting, 'We're the creatures who got lucky,'" Webb says.

I think people missed the point what this guy was trying to say.

He's not saying we're alone and that's the end of it. He's saying it's a possibility that we may be the only civilization in the universe or maybe even that we're the very first to pop up. If that's they case then it could be us that discovers and fertilises the rest of the universe.

He lost me near the beginning when he said that consciousness grew out of everything in science that preceded it. When the materialists get around to examining consciousness closely, they will discover that consciousness created everything and continues to do so.

Nah cause is the observation of the natural world and observed process would continue rather or not we observed them, so yes consciousness would grow out of natural processes that can be observed by science

Your whole presentation is based on human observational capacities which are very very limited. Who are we to call our endeavour complex ? Who are we to call ourselves intelligent ? We have access to less than 1% of the electromagnetic spectrum, we have wars, religions, frontiers and customs. This is not an evolved behavior. If we searched for intelligence rather than life we would have better results. A civilisation that is very ancient would have surpassed the limitations of polarities, matters, space and time. Looking at this with human logic is like teaching math to ants. We are so immature it is scary.

I saw a ship over Vedic City for 20 nights in a row when I was camping out. The ship contacted me telepathically, and gave me the same message every night. There was kind of a warm, rainbowy 80’s energy during the contact. I had been reading lots of books on Star People and molecular biology while starwatching nightly.

ETs could have visited Earth when it was populated by non-avian dinosaurs, pterosaurs, plesiosaurs, and tiny mammals scurrying around in the undergrowth, sent a message back to the mothership that there was no intelligent life, did some studies, took some samples, and left. 100 million years later, humans look up at the stars and wonder if there's life out there, develop ships to reach the first ever life sustaining alien planet, land on it and discover a world dominated by strange creatures, send a message back to the mothership that there's no sign of intelligent life, do some studies, take some samples, and leave. On that planet, 70 million years later, intelligent life forms look up at the stars and wonder if there's life out there....

The conclusion here fits well with mine: we are the creatures that settle Mars in this century and the galaxy during the coming thousand years. To leave our planet system we need new technology that will be developed until the end of this century on earth, mars or any of the human colonies that will be founded in our planet system.

Amusing this. The ego of those Stephen has questioned must be enormous. If aliens have found us and built spacecraft sophisticated enough to show themselves to us - what have we got to offer them?
We are destructive, and pretty stupid in the main [given where we are now we've engineered our own demise] . Only a handful of people have been creative enough to produce things of beauty, mostly we appear to destroy things of beauty, great beauty.
There is plenty of evidence going back to the time of Aristotle for UFOs, even evidence that a war between UFOs was conducted for our planet

I'm with Charles Fort on this one:

"I think that there are, out in inter-planetary space, Super Tamerlanes at the head of hosts of celestial ravagers--which have come here and pounced upon civilizations of the past, cleaning them up all but their bones, or temples and monuments--for which later historians have invented exclusionist histories. But if something now has a legal right to us, and can enforce its proprietorship, they've been warned off. It's the way of all exploitation. I should say that we're now under cultivation: that we're conscious of it, but have the impertinence to attribute it all to our own nobler and higher instincts……………..

But the acceptance is forced upon me that there are modes and modes and modes of inter-planetary existence: … a super-geography--or celestiography--of vast stagnant regions, but also of Super-Niagaras and Ultra-Mississippis: and a super-sociology--voyagers and tourists and ravagers: the hunted and the hunting: the super-mercantile, the super-piratic, the super-evangelical………….

The universal attempt to formulate or to regularize - an attempt that can be made only by disregarding or denying. Or all things disregard or deny that which will eventually invade and destroy them .......

If it's not of God it's of the Adversary; Satan. With that being truth for followers of Ya'shua the Messiah; pursuing alien life could have the most negative effects. I don't need to search for evil.

Ephesians 6:12 ESV For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.
1 John 5:19 ESV/ We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.

Since I'm quoting scripture, I'll include this one:
2 Corinthians 4:4 ESV/In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. (This is why you don't understand). John 20:29 ESV/Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” Isaiah 55:8 ESV/For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.

I have come to the precise conclusion detailed in this video. We are alone because the plethora of factors that grant our existence, and the logic of probability inevitably points to an infinite impossibility of our existance, whether by happenstance or design; therefore, we are truly lucky. Now, the dilemma of interstellar colonization. ...and we meet the impenetrable wall of radiation. But I digress.

Non mystical physical rules and time have created us and must do so elsewhere in the universe. Life probably begins and ends on thousands of planets every second. And yet we see none of them. The universe is bigger than we can imagine.

lets say the universe its 13 billion years old and life would theoretically be possible in the summer. lets say we just appeared after about 6 billion years of it being possible for life to emerge. now lets assume the universe has not been waiting 6 billion years, because on earth in 0,5 billion years there have been 3 different life events, excluding single cell. if we assume every 0,5 billion years a planet that passed the universe barriers can produce a single life event, earth had 3, then every planet ready for life has had possibly 12 chances to produce a single life event, a possibility for complex life. and since there are billions of planets in the habitable zones of our galaxy alone, i conclude this is a theory that considers only the factors that proves it self, and leaves out others that might disprove it. Imo its not that we are alone, there are a lot of civilization out there, i think we are just overestimating and imagining to much when it comes to interstellar travel. i think we imagine and theorize ways of going faster than light but in reality there might be civilizations millions of year old that have long found it to be impossible to do. so imo its more likely we have a lot of neighbours in our galaxy, we just cant reach each other. the milky of 100k light years apart, and if there are 100 civilizations, all separated by 1000 light years, we might never run into each other. we might need 950 more years for our signals to be picked up by someone else, and 1000 years after that for them to respond... so yeah, no one knows the answer to this one im afraid :P
